If you are stopped in a travel lane right now
Hazards on. Stay belted in the cab unless the truck is on fire or there is another immediate reason to get out. Call 911 before you call anyone else. A disabled truck blocking a lane on I-4 is a highway emergency, and getting the scene protected comes before getting it repaired. Everything else in this guide can wait ninety seconds.

1. The first five minutes
Everything expensive that happens after a breakdown usually traces back to a decision made in the first few minutes. Work this order:

Get out of the travel lanes
If the truck is still moving under its own power, use that. Momentum you have now is momentum you will not get back once it stops.

Hazards and, if safe, triangles
Warning devices out per the FMCSA spacing you already know — but only if you can place them without walking into live traffic.

Decide: stay in or get out
On an interstate shoulder, the cab is usually the safer place. Get out only if you have a real reason and a real gap.
One thing worth being blunt about: if the temperature gauge is the reason you are stopping, shut the engine down. Do not try to make the next exit. A hose or a water pump is a few hundred dollars. A cooked engine is five figures and weeks out of service, and the distance between those two outcomes is often about ten minutes of optimism. More on that in cooling system repair.
2. Positioning the truck
Where you stop determines whether the repair can happen where you are. Some spots on this corridor are workable. Some are not, and no mechanic worth calling will pretend otherwise.
- Good: a wide paved shoulder, a ramp with room, a truck stop lot, a rest area, a DC yard.
- Workable: a standard shoulder in a non-construction stretch, in daylight, with the unit fully off the lane line.
- Bad: a construction-narrowed shoulder, a bridge, a curve with no sight distance, anything at night with no lighting.
- Do not stop here if you can help it: in a travel lane, on soft sand, or on a steep crown where jacking is unsafe.
That last point matters more than people expect. Florida shoulders are often sand under a thin edge of pavement. A loaded trailer on soft ground cannot be safely jacked, which turns a forty-five-minute tire change into a tow.
3. Tow truck or mobile mechanic?
This is the decision that costs the most money when it goes wrong, and most drivers get it backwards.
Call a mobile mechanic first, unless you are blocking traffic or in danger. A heavy-duty tow for a Class 8 tractor-trailer is expensive, slow, and drops you at a shop with its own queue. A large share of the things that stop trucks — tires, air leaks, batteries, alternators, fuel filters, stuck regens, lighting — are repairable at the roadside in one to two hours.
You call a tow when the failure genuinely needs a building: clutch, transmission, differential, in-frame engine work, frame damage, or anything requiring a lift or a press. A decent mobile outfit will tell you that on the phone when the symptoms make it obvious, which saves you a service call entirely.
The one exception: if you are in a live lane or a position that is dangerous, the priority order is 911, then a tow to somewhere safe, then the repair. Safety beats economics every time.
4. Exactly what to tell dispatch
Five pieces of information get a truck rolling toward you with the right parts on board. Have them ready before you dial.
- Exact location. Interstate, direction of travel, and the nearest exit number or mile marker. "I-4 eastbound just past Exit 32" is perfect. If you genuinely do not know, read the mile marker off the small green posts — do not guess at an exit number, because a wrong guess costs more time than saying you are not sure. If your phone can drop a pin and text it, that beats everything.
- Truck details. Make, model, year, and engine if you know it. This determines what parts and what diagnostic software come with the tech.
- Symptoms in your own words. What it did, when it started, whether it was gradual or sudden, and any dash lights or codes showing. You do not need to diagnose it. Describing it accurately is enough.
- Load status. Loaded or empty, roughly what weight, and whether the load is temperature sensitive or hazmat. A reefer on a temp-spec load is a different priority than an empty deadhead.
- Your position. Travel lane, shoulder, ramp, lot, or safely off the road. This determines both the urgency and whether the repair can happen where you sit.
Also worth mentioning: any gate procedure if you are inside a facility, and whether the tech needs to be on a visitor list. At the distribution centers around Lakeland, Auburndale and Davenport, that one detail regularly saves half an hour at a guard shack.
5. Where the bad spots are on Polk County I-4
Forty miles of interstate between Plant City and ChampionsGate, and it is not uniform. Some places are much worse to be stranded than others.
Exit 38 — the SR 33 construction zone
Active reconstruction into roughly 2029: narrowed shoulders, shifting lanes, changing ramp geometry. Genuinely the worst place on this stretch to break down right now. If you can reach Exit 44 instead, do.
Exit 17 — Branch Forbes Road
Rural, thin on services, limited lighting. Fine in daylight, unpleasant at 2 a.m.
The Exit 27 and Exit 41 merges
Both Polk Parkway interchanges dump merging traffic into the through lanes. Lots of speed changes, less predictable driver behavior around a stopped truck.
ChampionsGate at Exit 58
Still a congestion pinch point even after the diverging diamond rebuild and the added lane. Heavy traffic, limited room.

6. What to do while you wait
- Stay hydrated. This is not a soft suggestion. A Central Florida afternoon on an asphalt shoulder with a dead A/C will hurt you faster than you expect.
- Stay visible. Hazards on, dome light on at night, high-vis vest if you have one and you need to be outside.
- Do not stand between the truck and traffic. Ever. Work from the shoulder side.
- Notify dispatch or your broker. Early, honestly, with the real ETA. Bad news does not improve with age.
- Take photos. The failure, the position, any damage. Useful for warranty, insurance and claims later.
- Have your paperwork ready. Unit number, VIN if the fleet needs it, and whoever authorizes repairs.
If it is a summer afternoon and the storm cells are building — which between June and September is most days — factor that in. Working on a truck in a Florida thunderstorm is not happening, and lightning here is not a theoretical risk.
7. What would have prevented this
Not everything is preventable. Plenty is. The failures we get called for most on this corridor are remarkably predictable:
- Aftertreatment derates. If your trucks run short DC-to-DC cycles, they will plug DPFs. Run parked regens on your schedule instead of waiting for the truck to demand one at a bad moment. More on DPF service →
- Heat-killed batteries. In Florida, batteries die from heat, not cold, and they give no warning. Load test them before summer, not after a no-start. More on electrical →
- Cooling systems. Check hoses, belts, fan clutch operation and radiator cleanliness in spring. Summer will find the weak one for you otherwise.
- Air system moisture. Humidity plus a tired air dryer cartridge equals water in the tanks and valves corroding from the inside.
- Tires. Underinflation plus Florida pavement heat is how blowouts happen. Pressures at every pre-trip, properly, not by kicking them.
